Application vs Registration: Don’t Get It Twisted

We get it! University admin can feel like a whole new language. Words like application and registration are often used in the same breath, and it’s no surprise that many learners think they’re the same thing. Spoiler alert: they’re not 😅

So let’s break it down – the NWU way – simple and stress-free.

Step 1: Application – Raising Your Hand

Think of applying as saying: “Hey, NWU 👋 I’d love to study with you!”

Your application is the first step in your journey to becoming an NWU student.

What happens during the application?

  • You choose the qualification(s) you want to study
  • You submit your personal details and academic results
  • NWU reviews your application to see if you meet the minimum requirements

Important to remember:

  • Applying does not mean you are officially a student yet
  • You can be conditionally accepted, finally accepted, or not accepted, depending on your results

📌 Application = Requesting a spot

Step 2: Acceptance – The Good News 🎉

Once NWU has assessed your application, you’ll receive feedback.

If you’re accepted (yay! 🥳), this means:

  • NWU is happy to offer you a spot
  • You’re one step closer to officially joining the NWU family

But… there’s still one final step.

Step 3: Registration – Claiming Your Seat 🎓

If application is raising your hand, then registration is taking your seat in the lecture hall. Registration happens after you’ve been accepted.

What happens during registration?

  • You confirm that you are definitely studying at NWU
  • You select your modules
  • You finalise financial arrangements
  • You officially become an NWU student 🎉

📌 Registration = Securing your spot!

No registration = no classes, no student number activation, no access to campus systems.

The Quick Difference 😉

Application Registration
You apply to study You confirm you are studying
Happens first Happens after acceptance
NWU evaluates you You finalise your studies
You’re not a student yet You are officially an NWU student

Why This Difference Matters 🚨

Every year, some learners think: “I applied, so I’m done.” Unfortunately… nope 😬

If you don’t register, you don’t start studying, even if you were accepted.

At NWU, we don’t want anyone missing out simply because of confusion.
