Everything you didn't know you needed: training, mentorship, funding, competitions, and a whole support crew in your corner. Meet the NWU Postgraduate Support Centre.
Let's be honest, postgraduate studies can feel like being dropped into the deep end of a very complicated swimming pool, handed a half-finished map, and told, "Good luck."
The good news? You are absolutely not alone. Tucked inside the Division for Research and Innovation is a dedicated unit that exists solely to make your Master's or Doctoral journey smoother, smarter, and frankly a lot less overwhelming. It's called the Postgraduate Support Centre (PGSC), and it's been quietly doing incredible work that every NWU postgrad should know about.
Whether you're still drafting your proposal, knee-deep in data analysis, or frantically writing up your final thesis, this is your guide to making the most of everything the PGSC has to offer.
Three Pillars That Hold Up Your Postgrad Journey
The PGSC operates through three interconnected divisions, each targeting a critical part of the postgraduate experience. Think of them as your academic support system, designed to carry you from orientation right through to graduation.
1 Higher Degrees Academic Support (HDAS)
Workshops, writing camps, and one-on-one consultations to sharpen your research and academic writing from the proposal stage onwards
2 Higher Degrees Student Development Support (HDSDS)
Skills training, orientation programmes, mentorship, and competitions designed to develop you as a researcher and as a person.
3 Postgraduate Funds Management (PGFM)
Managing external scholarships and generating funding opportunities to help support students throughout their postgraduate studies.
From Blank Page to Brilliant Research
One of the most valuable and underused services at NWU is the Higher Degrees Academic Support (HDAS) programme. This is where the real academic magic happens. The HDAS team works with internal academic staff, external facilitators, and NWU support units to offer world-class training throughout the year. Their workshops and interventions cover the full research lifecycle, so whether you're writing your first proposal or your final chapter, there's something for you.
What You'll Learn:

Postgraduate studies can be challenging, but with the right support, the right skills, and the right community around you, finishing on time isn't just possible. It's the plan.

When You Need Someone in Your Corner
Sometimes a workshop isn't what you need. Sometimes you just need someone to sit down with you, understand your specific situation, and help you find a path forward. The HDAS offers one-on-one consultations for students who are referred by their faculty or department, a personalised intervention that engages directly with both you and your supervisor.
During these sessions, the postgraduate support coordinator will share relevant training opportunities tailored to your journey, liaise with your supervisor to find practical solutions, and follow up to make sure things are actually improving. It's supportive, structured, and designed around you.
Prove You're More Than Just Your Thesis
Postgrad life isn't all late nights and literature reviews. The PGSC hosts some genuinely exciting competitions that challenge you to communicate your research in bold new ways, and yes, they look absolutely stunning on your CV.

You Don't Have to Figure It All Out Alone
Starting a Master's or PhD can feel isolating. The PGSC's Student Orientation & Mentorship Programmes are built specifically to break down that isolation, connecting you with resources, people, and a community from day one.
Through partnerships with Career Services, the Centre for Teaching & Learning, Student Wellness, and Thuso Resources (for local and international academic access), the orientation programme gives you a 360° view of everything available to support you.
The Postgraduate Forum is another highlight — a regular platform where students and staff come together to engage with critical research topics, share progress, and build networks that extend well beyond your own faculty.
Who Will You Be When You Graduate?
NWU believes a postgraduate degree should shape not just what you know, but who you are. The HDSDS actively works to develop six core graduate attributes throughout your studies, qualities that will define your career and impact for decades to come.
- Responsible & Engaged
- Knowledgeable Professional
- Innovative Critical Thinker
- Principled Leader
- Effective Communicator
- Skilled Collaborator
