Your first semester at North-West University is a whirlwind of new faces, new classes, and a sudden realisation that you’re officially an adult (kind of). It’s an exciting yet overwhelming time, but don’t worry: We’ve got the inside scoop from NWU students who’ve been in your shoes. Here’s how to not just survive but absolutely thrive in your first semester at the NWU Potchefstroom, NWU Mahikeng, or NWU Vanderbijlpark campuses.
1. Go to Class (Yes, Even the Early Ones!)
Skipping class might be tempting when your bed is whispering sweet nothings, but showing up is half the battle.
Tumelo Rakuba, a BA Hons in Advanced Corporate Communications graduate, emphasises, “Attend class. You’ll get insights beyond what’s in your textbooks.” Plus, it’s a great way to catch key details that could boost your grades and help you stay ahead.
2. Choose Your Circle Wisely
Your friends can make or break your university experience. Surround yourself with people who push you to be better.
Tumelo suggests, “Observe the students who participate most in class and befriend them. Good company leads to better decisions and, ultimately, better grades.” Katlego Khambule, a third-year BCom Financial Accounting student, adds, “Make friends in your course who are a year ahead of you. They’ll be your go-to for guidance and study tips.”
3. Engage With Your Lecturers
They might seem intimidating at first, but your lecturers at NWU are a goldmine of knowledge. Katlego shares, “Always speak to your lecturers, even privately. They can provide insights and support you won’t find in textbooks.”
4. Time Management is Key
Balance is everything. Between lectures, assignments, and your social life, time management will save you from burnout.
Tumelo advises, “Manage your time wisely. Academics, social life, and self-care should all have a place in your schedule.” Staying organised is crucial for success in NWU’s diverse academic programs.
5. Use Campus Resources
You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. NWU offers a variety of student support services, from mental health resources to academic support.
Tumelo reminds us, “Use what’s available, whether it’s mental health support, tutors, or even additional reading materials to expand your knowledge.”
6. Prepare Before Class
Katlego suggests, “Go through the content before attending classes.” This helps you engage better and understand discussions more deeply.
7. Live the Student Life
It’s not all about hitting the books; make the most of your university experience at NWU.
Lerato Tshweu, a third-year BA Tourism Management student, says, “Sort your classes and don’t miss them, but also experience student life.” Katlego adds, “Go out, release the stress, and enjoy your time here.”
8. Find Your Rhythm
Ethan Terblanche, a BSc in Social Science with Psychology and the Social Sciences student, gives us this golden advice:
“The first semester of university is like being dropped into a maze; exciting, overwhelming, and full of unexpected twists. The trick? Walk, don’t sprint. Get a planner (or at least pretend you have one), actually read the course outline, and show up to class. Find your people, the ones who remind you of deadlines, share lecture notes, and make bad days bearable. Ask questions, even the ones that feel silly. Sleep is not a myth. Protect it. And most importantly, give yourself grace. No one has it all figured out, but step by step, you’ll find your way.”
With all that being said, your first semester at North-West University is a learning curve, but with the right mindset, good friends, and smart habits, you’ll not only survive but you’ll thrive. Take it one step at a time, ask for help when you need it, and enjoy the ride at NWU Potchefstroom, NWU Mahikeng, or NWU Vanderbijlpark. Good luck!
