Your Postgrad Personality Type Is…

Not sure whether your next step is honours, a master's or a PhD? Your postgrad personality type points you to the path that suits how you work. Find yours below.

Choosing a postgraduate qualification is less about "what's next" and more about "what suits me". The five types below map to the postgraduate routes at North-West University (NWU). Most people are a blend, so note your top two.

1. The Career Accelerator → Honours

You want a sharper CV, and you want it soon. You like structured learning, clear outcomes and a qualification that employers recognise. An honours degree deepens your undergraduate field and is the usual stepping stone to a master's. Your move: Browse the NWU honours degrees and check the entry requirements for your field.

2. The Specialist → Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate

You know exactly which skill gap you want to close, and you'd rather get there fast than study broadly. Targeted diplomas and certificates suit people who want depth in one area without a long research commitment. Your move: See the honours, postgraduate diploma and certificate options.

3. The Deep Diver → Master's

Questions keep you up at night, and "good enough" never feels enough. You enjoy owning a topic, working independently and building a real argument. A master's gives you the space, plus a supervisor to sharpen your thinking. Your move: Read the master's and doctoral FAQs before you pick a field. Note that applications for most master's programmes have a closing date (30 November 2026).

4. The Trailblazer → PhD

You don't just want answers, you want to create new knowledge. You're patient, self-driven and comfortable with ambiguity. A PhD is a long road, and it's built for people who want to contribute something original to their field. Your move: Discover the PhD programmes at NWU.

5. The Strategist → The Funded Route

You're ambitious and practical. You'd study further tomorrow if the numbers worked. Good news: funding exists, and it's worth planning around from day one.

Your move: Read our guides to NWU postgraduate bursaries and the fully funded master's and doctoral bursary.

Not sure which type you are?

Ask yourself one question: Do I want to apply knowledge, deepen it, or create it? Applying points to honours or a diploma, deepening to a master's, and creating to a PhD.
