Funding your higher education journey does not have to be a source of stress. North-West University (NWU) offers a transparent, multi-layered financial support ecosystem for your undergraduate degree. From automatic academic merit bursaries that deduct up to 100% of your tuition fees to National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allocations and specialised talent grants, the funds are there. The key to securing your financial future for the 2027 intake is understanding the rules, preparing your documentation early, and meeting critical deadlines.
Stepping into the world of higher education is a massive milestone. You are about to unlock your ultimate academic era, choose a career path, and meet your lifelong squad.
Tuition fees, textbooks, accommodation, and living expenses can quickly add up, making the dream of earning an undergraduate degree feel gatekept by finances. At NWU, we believe that financial barriers should never stand in the way of academic potential.

1. The Automatic Academic Merit Bursary: Get Rewarded for Your Marks
If you are currently working hard in Grade 12 to secure top marks, NWU will reward your dedication. One of our most trusted financial systems is the First-Year Academic Merit Bursary. The best part? There is zero administrative gatekeeping—full-time contact students are evaluated automatically based on the final matric results released by the Department of Basic Education in January. No separate application forms are required.
The bursary is calculated by taking your top six matric subjects and dividing them to find your true average, while completely disregarding Life Orientation.
The discount is applied directly to your tuition fees according to a strict sliding scale:

Crucial Note for Senior Students: The funding momentum does not stop after your first year. Senior undergraduate students (in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year) who pass all their modules in a single academic year with an overall average of 75% or higher will continue to receive automatic merit bursaries to cover their studies.
2. NSFAS Funding: The Vital Government Lifeline
For South African citizens whose combined gross household income falls below R350,000 per annum (or R600,000 for students living with disabilities), the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides comprehensive financial clearance.
- What it Covers: A successful NSFAS allocation is an absolute win, covering your registration fees, full tuition, learning materials (books or digital devices), accommodation, and a monthly living allowance.
- The No Double Funding Rule: It is vital to note that institutional policies strictly prohibit double funding. If you are fully approved for NSFAS, you cannot receive payouts from NWU internal merit or talent bursaries. Your tuition is fully covered, allowing university funds to be redistributed to other deserving students.
- Academic Continuity: To keep your NSFAS funding year-on-year, you must maintain steady academic progress, passing at least 50% of your annual course modules.

3. Culture, Sport, and Leadership Bursaries
Higher education is about more than just what happens inside the lecture hall. NWU actively builds a vibrant campus atmosphere by funding unique student talents and leadership histories. Unlike merit bursaries, these require you to submit a formal application once you have received a conditional offer of admission.
- Leadership Bursaries: Were you elected as the Head Boy or Head Girl of your high school in Grade 12? NWU offers a once-off leadership bursary allocation to recognise your school-level service during your first year of enrolment.
- Arts & Culture Bursaries: If you excel individually in music, drama, debate, or visual arts, you can apply for specialised cultural grants. Recipients are expected to actively participate in NWU's campus cultural events.
- Family Discounts: NWU looks after families. If two or more siblings are registered full-time for an undergraduate degree simultaneously, the family can apply for an annual tuition fee discount ranging from 15% to 30%, depending on the number of siblings enrolled.
4. The Timeline to Lock In Your 2027 Funding
Applications for the 2027 academic cycle open officially on 1 June 2026. Securing your funding means syncing your calendar with strict institutional deadlines.
Step 1: Collate Your Digital Document Folder (June 2026)
Do not let your application get put on hold due to missing files. Create a secure digital folder containing certified copies of your South African ID, your latest Grade 11 or Grade 12 results, and certified proof of your parents' or guardians' household income.
Step 2: Submit Your Core University Application Early (July 2026)
Apply online through the NWU student portal. Remember, highly competitive selection programmes (such as Pharmacy, Nursing, or Graphic Design) close their gates early on 30 June 2026, while general undergraduate degrees close on 31 August 2026.
Step 3: Log In to the Financial Support Portal (September 2026)
Once your academic admission is conditionally secured, use your student number to log back into the DIY services platform. Download and complete the application forms for Leadership, Arts & Culture, or Family discounts before the published financial cut-off dates.
