The Application Timeline: A General Guide

NWU's application process typically runs from April to August for the following academic year. The general closing date for most undergraduate programmes is usually in August. However, specific highly competitive or specialised programs, known as "selection courses," have an earlier closing date, typically in June

It's crucial to check the specific closing dates for your chosen programme on the official NWU studies website. Applying as early as possible is always the best strategy to ensure you don't miss any deadlines.

Academic and Selection Criteria: What We Look For

Your application is evaluated based on a combination of factors.

  • Academic Selection: This is the primary criterion. We review your academic achievement based on your Grade 11 final results or your Grade 12 June/final results. The best candidates are selected based on a ranking system, though we also consider average performance. A final offer is always conditional on meeting the minimum requirements in your final Grade 12 examination.
  • Selection Tests: In addition to your academic performance, a selection test is required for specific programmes. These tests may include psychometric questionnaires that assess your personality, aptitude, and other qualities relevant to the field of study. Please note that selection does not automatically mean you will write a test. Different courses have different selection processes.

Programmes with Specific Selection Processes

Many faculties and programmes have unique application requirements and earlier closing dates.

  • Law (LLB and Extended LLB, BCom in Law, and BA in Law): Your application is assessed based on your Grade 11 or Grade 12 results. The most promising candidates are selected according to a ranking system. You'll typically receive the results of this selection process by the end of August.
  • Creative Arts (Music & Graphic Design):

                    ○ Music (Diploma in Music | BA Music & Society | BMus): Applications usually close in June. You must complete up to two

compulsory audition rounds. Be sure to check the School of Music website for all the details on the audition process.

                    ○ Graphic Design: This course's application dates and selection criteria are available on the NWU website's dedicated Graphic Design

                       page.

  • Urban and Regional Planning: Applications usually close in August. The selection process includes your academic marks, an online questionnaire, and an interview with an Urban Planner. You may also be asked to complete a psychometric assessment.
  • Theology: Your Grade 11 or 12 marks are used for selection. Students who intend to train for the ministry in the Reformed Churches in South Africa must also complete a psychometric assessment. The faculty will communicate directly with you about the arrangements for this assessment.
  • Engineering: The closing date for Engineering applications is typically in August. After you apply, you will receive a letter confirming whether you meet the initial criteria. If your Grade 11 marks don't meet all the requirements, the selection committee might recommend the Engineering Test or the Xcel programme as alternative pathways to qualify.
