Starting university can be an exciting and overwhelming experience. For many first-year students at North-West University (NWU), the transition from high school to tertiary education has challenges.
Tumelo Baloyi, a three-time North-West University graduate, has successfully navigated through the academic journey, passing his undergraduate degree and both his honours and master’s degrees with cum laude, being recognised by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and now pursuing his PhD. Tumelo has gained valuable insights into what it takes to survive and thrive in your first year at NWU. Here’s his guide to help you through this exciting and transformative period.
1. Embrace the Change and Get Organised
Your first year will bring many changes, so it’s important to embrace them. University is different from high school in many ways, and the sooner you adjust, the better. Make a study schedule that works for you. “I found that using a planner helped me map out my class timetable, assignment deadlines, and revision periods”, he said. Staying organised will help you stay ahead.
2. Get Involved and Make Connections
North-West University offers a wide range of student societies and clubs. Whether academic, cultural, or sports-related, there’s always something for everyone. Join a few that interest you. You’ll meet like-minded people and start forming your university network. Attend social events, NWU has an active campus life with plenty of events and activities to help you settle in. Tumelo advised against sticking to your books. Instead, he says, “Get out there and attend social gatherings, sports events, orientations, and other campus events. It’s a great way to meet people and integrate into university life.”
3. Stay Adaptable and Open to Learning
The academic demands at NWU are higher than what you might be used to, and it’s important to stay adaptable and open to learning. The university’s approach to teaching may be different from high school, but that’s part of the learning process.
4. Keep your eyes on the prize.
Throughout your first year, always remind yourself why you’re at university. Yes, there will be distractions and challenges throughout, but remember that every step you take is part of your journey towards your qualification and future.
“My journey from first-year student to where I am now has been filled with ups and downs, but each experience has shaped me into who I am today. If you approach your first year with an open mind, a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude, I have no doubt that you’ll survive, and you’ll thrive,’’ Tumelo said.
