Asking for Help is Not a Sign of Weakness in Varsity

Navigating your undergraduate degree is a marathon, not a sprint. At North-West University (NWU), resilience is the new flex. Whether you’re a first-year student finding your feet or a senior finishing strong, asking for help is the ultimate power move to secure your academic success.

Starting your undergraduate degree is an absolute main character moment. You’ve moved into your res, found your tribe, and finally started those specialised modules you've been dreaming about. But let’s be real for a second: varsity life can low-key become a stressful time if you try to carry the entire load alone.

The transition from high school to tertiary education brings a unique set of side quests, complex research, high-stakes assessments, and the pressure of independent living. At NWU, we want to shift the narrative.

1. CTL Support Services

The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is the intellectual heart of your academic journey. They offer a suite of free services designed to ensure you don’t just survive your undergraduate degree, but actually slay it.

  • Academic Advising: This collaborative practice empowers you to achieve your goals. Advisers can help you with time management, critical thinking, and even exam preparation.
  • Supplemental Instruction (SI): A non-remedial approach where you learn what to learn alongside how to learn in a group setting.
  • Tutoring & Math Centres: Need help with a specific module or struggling with stats? Peer-led tutoring and dedicated Math and Stats centres provide the targeted support you need to keep your GPA high.
  • Reading & Writing Development: From mastering academic reading to refining your essay-writing skills at the Writing Centre, these resources ensure your assignments always hit the mark.

2. Peer Power: Mentoring and PALS

Sometimes, you just need to talk to someone who has been there, done that.  That’s where our peer-led programmes come in.

  • Peer Mentoring: Senior students who have successfully transitioned to varsity are available to help you settle in, make friends, and navigate the overwhelming parts of first year. They provide a safe space to share personal, social, and academic concerns.
  • Peer Assisted Learning Support (PALS): Specifically for distance learners, PALS serve as a bridge between you and the faculty, offering study tips and personalised advice based on their own success in the modules.

3. Psychological & Wellness Support

Your mental health is just as important as your academic transcript. In fact, you can’t have one without the other. NWU's Student Counselling and Development (SCD) team is here to ensure you reach your optimal wellness potential.

  • Professional Counselling: Qualified psychologists and social workers offer support for everything from stress, worry, and anxiety to trauma and personal growth.
  • 24-Hour Crisis Lines: If things feel like they’re spiralling, help is always a phone call away. You can reach the Thuso 24-hour crisis line at 082 815 9781 or the Higher Health helpline at 0800 36 36 36.
  • Disability Rights Unit (DRU): We are committed to an inclusive environment. If you have a disability, the DRU provides the specialised support and advocacy you need to succeed.
